No, it doesn’t involve frat house keggers or spring break hedonism. I never took part in those type of activities.

OWWW! (Wife punches me in the arm) Okay, okay…maybe on a RARE occasion did I dabble in such debauchery.

But this story has nothing to do with partying. It’s about a term paper.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’d rather pull one of my own teeth (sans anesthesia) than write a term paper.
It’s an excruciating experience.

But I just didn’t have one paper due. I had TWO. In separate classes. Within a day or two of each other.

Talk about your nightmares…

So I started thinking…I could spend the next 2 weeks in the library, nose firmly planted in some dusty old reference book that smelled like mold, scribbling notes and making copies and hating every minute of it…

Or I could come up with an easier way. A faster way.
And a more efficient way.

Cheating? Nah. That’s not what I’m about.

Leveraging? Now that’s another story…the kind that kills two birds with one stone.

I began to look at the 2 classes–Philosophy and Comparative Literature–more closely. And I realized that there was some overlap in material.

Ding ding ding.

So I decided to write one paper for both classes. That would save me an enormous amount of time, energy, and stress–PLUS each professor would get exactly what they wanted.

Long story short, I hit the books, cranked out a killer paper, and got a 4.0 in both classes. And it took me half the time and half the effort as it normally would have.

All because of leverage and scale.

Seeing any similarities to your internet business?

Because if you’re working too hard to achieve too little, you’re not leveraging yourself properly.

Look, most internet marketing newcomers believe that the key to the treasure chest lies in gaining as much knowledge as possible.

So they chase every product that comes down the line, stockpiling ebooks and software and training manuals and CDs and DVDs…all the time thinking, “this will be the ONE that puts me over the top.”

But the only thing these products do is put you in a state of confusion.

The secret is this…if you want to hit the hourly rate goal that we talked about a couple of emails ago, you need more leverage, not more knowledge.

So how do you increase leverage? In 3 steps…

–Isolate those activities that generate more income than it costs to get them done.
–Increase one or more of the variables in your profit producing formulas (Did I lose you here? Scroll down to the link, get the Manifesto, and turn to page 21).
–Develop and implement a business plan that creates leverage through tight focus and proper strategy.

Ick. Sounds like work doesn’t it? Well, to a certain degree, it is.

But I’ll tell you this much…if you start leveraging your business building efforts, you’re going to work a LOT less and make a LOT more.

You’ll have more time for your family, for your friends, and for yourself–all while the business hums along, making money.

But you gotta have the systems in place. And you gotta know where to start.

How many hours did you work in your internet business today?

Now, if you’re juggling a full time day job and trying to build your business in the off hours, you might say one or two.

But if you’re a full blown internet marketer, you’re most likely puffing out your chest and crowing, “Well Rich, I worked a full 6 hours in my business today.
Worked darn hard, too…look at this paper cut I got.”

Okay, maybe I’m pulling your leg a bit. But I’m trying to make a point here..one that is probably going to hurt…

And here goes…you didn’t do SQUAT today.

Sorry, but it’s probably true. No matter how many hours you spend “working” on generating profits for your internet business, you spend considerably more doing non-productive activities.

So what’s non-productive? Chatting with friends, reading an ebook, talking on the phone, running to the kitchen for a snack, surfing the web, getting the mail…

And then there’s the mother of all non-productive activities…the one that sucks the time from our day like a brand new Hoover with a jet engine attached…

…the one you’re doing right now.

(Ouch–that even hurt me a little.).

Think it’s different for other business owners? Think again. One study of Fortune 500 CEOs estimated that they only spend 28-38 minutes a day actually doing something that directly generates profits.

28-38 minutes. No wonder our economy is so screwed up.

So how do you overcome this?

Well, my buddy Alex Mandossian revealed his secret for getting maximum efficiency out of the “revenue generating hours”, as he likes to call them.

It’s simple, it’s easy, and it works like a charm.
Here’s what you do…

–Get an egg timer. You know, the little white ones you can buy for a couple bucks at Wal Mart.

–Put it on your desk and set it for an hour.

–Until that timer goes off, focus on nothing but profit building. Don’t answer the phone, don’t check email, don’t look at your stats, don’t talk to your family, don’t even get up to go to the bathroom.

Use this time to bear down and really get some stuff done, instead of fooling yourself that you’re working while surfing YouTube for hit-in-the-crotch videos.

(You know who you are…)

You’ll be amazed at how much you can get finished without distractions. And when that timer goes off, you’ll have a genuine sense of accomplishment instead of “Oh well…I guess I’ll do that tomorrow.”

I immediately started doing this, and was completely blown away by how much more productive I was. It really made a significant difference in my daily goals, my business goals, and most of all–my PROFIT goals.

And all because of a simple little egg timer.

Do this 2-4 times a day at different intervals and see for yourself what happens. One tip: don’t run a string of one hour nose-to-the-grindstone sessions together–you’ll only burn yourself out.

Then after you take care of the productive hours, you can go ahead and do all the other stuff. Why not? You deserve it!

Now…that didn’t hurt too badly, did it?
